Waking up sober is my single favorite reason not to drink
DiscussionI've been sober for around 3 years now. I quit counting the days a long time ago. Every morning I wake up sober is an incredible gift to myself. It literally never gets old. In fact, I feel like it gets more special every single day.
There are so many benefits to not drinking, and I love and appreciate all of them. But waking up sober is simply the best. Not drinking is my present self looking out for my future self.
For those of you just starting out, please remember this is the ultimate gift you can give yourself: a life filled with peace and joy.
Sober mornings and black coffee are my jam.
Coffee is my true addiction now. Since I quit drinking I've gotten into making espresso. Cheers.
When I woke up hungover I couldn't drink coffee, because it would make me sick. Currently brewing a fresh pot because I woke up not hungover. Go team.
Tea is my new jam. I ditched the IPAs and stouts for chai and oolong. Love my morning tea. And afternoon and evening.
Every once in a while, especially when I have a gnarly cold or flu, I remember that groggy feeling of waking up hungover or half drunk after staying up for no reason, and just fighting through the day. Do not miss it at all.
Yes. Some days I wake up particularly tired for whatever reason, and I remember that this was every day for me, but worse with the hangovers. I don't miss it one bit.
So happy to read this today. It's something I repeat every sober morning, and if someone 3 years in still feels it, that's great confirmation it can continue. I have yet to wake up after zero drinks the night before regretting not having them. The mornings I woke up regretting the drinks I did have, too many to count.
Waking up and not wondering what you texted before falling asleep is a wonderful thing.
I'm at a reunion. I snapped awake at 6:30 this morning, grabbed a quick shower, got dressed and walked to a little farmers market, then had breakfast on my own before walking back to my hotel and heading out for the day. I feel great. It's wonderful.
Same. It's Saturday morning and I'm not hungover. I've had some coffee and I'm ready for a good day off.
It's lovely, isn't it? No guilt or remorse, no stomach pains, no wasted mornings. Life in full colour.
The only thing I sort of miss is that when I drank, I'd be awake at 5am and often get a few hours of work done before everyone else was up. Now that I'm sober I sleep a solid 8 hours straight.
I'm aware this is much better for me, and there are many other benefits, but I do miss those dawn hours.
