Anyone else wake up at 3am every night for no reason?
QuestionNot sure how to explain this properly, but here goes. I keep waking up around 3 or 4am almost every night. It doesn't matter when I go to bed. Early, late, same thing.
I'm dead tired, but the second I wake up my brain is wide awake. Thoughts start racing, my body feels tense, sometimes my heart is pounding a bit. It's like my body flipped a switch.
Some nights I fall back asleep. Other nights I just lie there staring at the ceiling, stressing about how wrecked I'll feel tomorrow.
What's messing with me the most is that now I kind of expect it. Even before I fall asleep I'm thinking, yeah, I'll be up at 3 again.
Anyone else dealing with this? Did it just randomly start for you too?
Yes. 3 to 4am every single day, and I can't sleep past it. Losing my mind. It's the worst.
Do you go back to sleep? I've been awake since 2.30am. I usually only get back to sleep for a moment after 7.
I think everybody tends to wake up around that time for a brief moment, but most people fall back asleep almost instantly. Us insomniacs can't get back to sleep once we're up.
That actually makes a lot of sense.
Curious, when you wake up, what do you feel stops you falling back asleep right away? Is it your mind switching on, body tension, or more the frustration and the expectation that you won't sleep again?
For me it's 1:00 sharp. What helps me is eating a banana or drinking a cup of warm milk with honey. Try it.
When you wake up, or before you go to sleep?
It's normal. Cortisol naturally rises in the early morning. I've woken up at this time every night of my life to pee. Usually I fall straight back asleep, but if I'm stressed about something my mind latches onto it, and I end up ruminating on that or on the fact that I'm still awake.
It lasts a day or two at most, and I now trust that it's short term and don't sweat it. I've also found that magnesium glycinate in the evening makes my sleep less interrupted, and a hard workout and a hot shower knock me out.
Yeah, this still happens to me fairly often. Usually I can fall back asleep within 30 minutes. If I don't, I get out of bed and watch a history or space show, just enough for my mind to focus on something else. I'll usually fall back asleep when I do that.
Same. I work early and set my alarm for 4, but I'm often up between 2 and 3. I literally applied to a grad school program just because I have so much more time in my day than most people.
Midnight, 1:30, 2:00, 3:00, 5:15. It never ends.
