Anyone here who stopped drinking in their 30s? What were your reasons?

Question

I am so bored of drinking. Mid thirties here. I'm a big lightweight, and even a couple of drinks mean a terrible hangover the next day. I feel cranky, and the day is lost to napping in bed and eating junk food.

I also really don't enjoy the tipsiness and loss of control that comes with it. It's scary to me. I feel like I'm not being myself, just an exaggerated version of myself. So done with that. Ready to join the no drinking gang.

Anyone who stopped drinking in their 30s, what were your reasons? How did it improve your life? How did your social circle take it? I have annoying family members who just don't understand it, and 'but just have ONE glass then' is on repeat.

And what's your non alcoholic drink of choice now? Did you stop beer and cocktails altogether, or switch to alcohol free beer and mocktails when you're out, or even at home?

If I don't want to drink in a social setting, I always order a cranberry and soda with a lime twist. Make sure the soda is on the bottom.

No one ever says anything if you're carrying one around, even the most bare bones place can usually make one, and you end the evening well hydrated, full of antioxidants and with happy kidneys. It's a win, win, win.

Love this. I also do soda, lime and bitters sometimes to switch it up.

Sometimes I just do straight ginger ale with lime. It looks like a rye and ginger.

Seltzer with pineapple works too. It's my go-to.

I'm trying to cut down, because I recognise the hangovers aren't worth it anymore. I often lose a whole day or more to a hangover and end up feeling low and not getting anything done. It also tanks my immune system, and I swear it makes my skin break out worse.

It's hard, because I love being a bit tipsy and it soothes my overthinking brain. My top tips: keep non alcoholic substitutes in the fridge, like kombucha, low calorie soft drinks, or the huge range of alcohol free beers and ciders around these days. And exercise. Get those feel good endorphins naturally.

I haven't 100% stopped, but I might have one or two drinks in an average month now in my thirties, compared to one or two a day in my twenties. I definitely drank too much.

I cut back for health reasons, mostly increasingly awful headaches, and social ones, since my friends were cutting back a lot too. It did have good health effects, including cutting my headaches to about half their old strength and frequency. I'll still have the odd glass of champagne for a celebration, but mostly I drink water and tea now.

I've had maybe 5 drinks in the last 5 years. I just reached a point where I was done with the sugar, the hangovers and the money spent on wine.

Other people can get weird about it. Either they assume I'm sober because I had a problem, or they don't understand why anyone would choose not to drink and pressure me to. Both can usually be fixed by keeping a non alcoholic drink in your hand when others are drinking. In formal settings, have anything bubbly in a glass, with a lemon or lime wedge if there is one.

Yep, I stopped in my early 30s. I'm prone to migraines, and it was too risky that I'd feel awful for a couple of days after. Now I might have a glass of fizz on my birthday or at Christmas, but only if I'm feeling good. The rest of the time I just feel so happy and smug on a weekend morning when people are complaining about their hangovers.

I quit drinking to try to lose weight, and because the hangovers were killing me even after two glasses of wine. I've stayed off it because I realized just how much I'd been drinking. Now it's like everywhere I turn someone's asking if they can get me something, and I see how often I just said yes without thinking.

I stopped drinking in my mid thirties. I'd noticed a lot of anxiety, insomnia, hangovers. The first few weeks were rough emotionally. I didn't taper or switch to alcohol free versions, I just stopped. I drink a lot of sparkling water, and a nice cup of chamomile tea is my special treat in the evening.

Since I stopped, my social anxiety is basically gone. I sleep so much better. I'm able to handle my problems. I'm more patient with my kids. I've also noticed I don't like the taste of alcohol anymore, so it truly isn't worth it for me.

I quit at 29, so almost in my thirties. Seven years later, it's definitely one of the best decisions I've ever made. You don't realize how normal drinking culture is until you quit. If you're thinking of quitting, you definitely should. And you'll save so much money.
