Do you find hangovers get worse the older you get?

Question

Back in my college days, in my roaring 20s, I could drink myself under the table until 2am and be in class by 10am with no hangover, or at worst a slight one.

Now I drink one glass of wine and I feel hungover for two days. Has anyone else experienced this, or am I just a lightweight nowadays?

Yes. I have a personal three drink limit now, because I can't function the next day if I have more than that.

Yes. I remember a night out on the town around my 30th birthday, and I was a mess all weekend. It was terrible. A couple of years later a friend threw me a second sweet sixteen party, and that was the year I learned 32 was the age when shots stopped being digestible. A scientific study with a sample size of one.

I'm 43 now and don't really drink. Not being hungover is part of it. I still have a cocktail or a couple of beers now and then. Wine hits me the hardest, so that's pretty much only for special occasions. I don't miss the drinking or the hangovers.

Ugh, yes. A couple of weekends ago I went out with some friends in their mid twenties. I'm 34. I literally prepped all day, hydrating and making sure I ate well, because I had a ton to do the next day.

I had three craft beers over three hours with water in between, and woke up the next morning with a splitting headache. Like, what?

But like a lot of people, I've found some drinks sit better with my old body than others. My go-to for having a few without paying for it the next day is gin and diet tonic with double lime.

Yeah. I seem to handle some drinks better than others. I can get a two day hangover with puking from just two beers, but a couple of whiskey drinks leave me pretty functional. Drinking lots of water helps too.

I'd rather slowly sip two or three drams over an evening than feel bad the next day from beer or wine.

I get a headache before I can even get a buzz going these days. Sometimes I wake up with a full blown hangover when I was never actually drunk the night before. I don't feel like I deserve it in those situations, and yet my body can be a real jerk about it.

I used to love wine and cocktails, and in my 20s I could have a few glasses often without much issue. In my early 30s now, the fatigue, brain fog, dehydration, anxiety and lost sleep were getting worse with even one or two drinks, and it just wasn't worth it.

I also realized I loved the things added to the alcohol, like the grape in wine or the fruit flavours in cocktails, way more than the alcohol itself. So mocktails and fancy sparkling waters for me from now on.

I guess I'm the only one who's still fine. I turned 40 this year, still go hard a couple of times a week and spring up in the morning ready to go. I might need an extra coffee in the afternoon, but that's it. I'm very active and have no kids, and I think both of those help.

What you're all saying is so true. It sucks feeling the creeping effects of getting older. I get headaches and nausea after drinking too.

When I was pregnant I craved alcohol at social events like weddings, but I had my favorite soda instead, which really helped. It was nice not being hungover the next day, so I'm going to start replacing alcohol with soda or flavored water. Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm glad I'm not the only one.
