How do you handle that late afternoon energy crash?
QuestionEvery day around 3 or 4pm I hit a weird wall where I can't focus, I get grumpy and I just want to lie down. I've tried coffee, but sometimes it just makes me anxious later.
I'm not sure if it's food, sleep, stress or just being human, but I'm wondering what others do to power through that slump.
If I'm at the office, I go for a walk. If I'm working from home, I'll go for the walk, or if it's really bad, take a 15 to 20 minute nap. Both do wonders.
I never, ever drink anything caffeinated after 3pm. I used to eat a bit of 70% dark chocolate, but even that messed with my sleep, and nothing gets to mess with my night's sleep. It's always paramount.
This. A dose of sunlight will wake you back up if a nap isn't possible.
Wow, just knowing other people have this problem makes me feel better. Around 3 each day I get really foggy and headachey, and I find it very hard to focus too.
I started doing a 10 minute walk plus a high protein snack. It feels dumb and simple, but it wakes my brain up way better than another cup of coffee.
I only realised this recently too. It turns out my project was moving so slowly because I kept starting work around 4pm, right when that brutal late afternoon crash hits. No wonder I was stuck in slow motion. I still haven't figured out how to fix it. I still can't focus, and I really want a nap at that time.
If you can lie down, I would. I try to listen to my body as much as possible. It might just be a lull for you.
If you do get some kind of rest time, don't fill it with tech. Just lie there, and when you're charged or bored you'll have energy again. If you pacify yourself with something distracting, you aren't actually resting, and you'll feel it for the rest of the evening.
Walk or dance around, just move. It works better than any coffee. And watch what you eat and drink through the day. A sugary, carb heavy breakfast and lunch will crash you out fast by the time 3pm hits.
After lunch, or any time I feel a bit sluggish, I take a short siesta at the office. It's kind of an accepted practice for everyone there. If that doesn't work, I sometimes go for a walk around the block to shake it off.
