I've fixed my awful sleep. Here's how.
Small winI've had a breakthrough. Years of bad sleep, 4 to 6 hours a night, and 7 hours was a miracle. Recently I'm hitting 8, 8.5, 9 hours a night.
I quit alcohol a few years ago, which helped reduce my anxiety, which helped my sleep. I walk a lot, exercise and eat clean. When I eat junk like lots of sugar, I wake up early and feel awful. I also drink a lot of caffeine, and I've recently limited it to two or three cups a day.
My routine, a staple for the last few years that got me to an average of 6 to 7 hours: foam noise cancelling earplugs, a silk wraparound eye mask, and an e-reader on dark mode in a blacked out room. I read on my side, which is my sleeping position, with the earplugs in and the mask on my forehead ready to go. When my eyes get heavy I drop the e-reader on the bed and pull the mask down. I'm out within 10 seconds.
Recent additions: a banana just before bed, a 12 hour rain sounds playlist all night, barely audible through the earplugs but I'm convinced it's making a huge positive impact, and magnesium before bed. Since adding these three I'm hitting 8 to 9 hours a night. When I wake up to pee I go straight back to sleep, which has never happened before.
I also smoke weed, and I sleep much better without it. I can fall asleep in about 3 seconds when I'm stoned, but I feel groggy the next morning. Sober sleep really is king.
Tonight I'm going to try to hit 9 plus hours. I haven't had sleep like this since I was in school. For reference, I'm 37, male.
Quitting alcohol fixed my insomnia too. If I do drink, I'm prepared not to sleep for 2 or 3 nights afterwards. By day 4 I'm sleeping normally again.
Yeah, same here. Even one night of drinking wrecks my sleep for days. It feels like hitting reset on your progress. Nothing beats that clean, deep, natural sleep.
When I gave up alcohol five years ago it completely changed my life. Everything went from bad to good, quickly. I will never go back.
Sleep master black belt status.
Haha, still a white belt in training, but finally levelling up. Mastery is 9 plus hours on command.
Great for you. Hardcore insomniacs have tried all of this to no avail, and many of us already do what you're doing. But your advice is excellent for people with mild insomnia.
Yeah, totally get that. Sleep issues run deep, and what works for one person might do nothing for another. I've been on the struggle bus for years, so I'm just sharing what finally clicked for me. Hope you find something that works.
Magnesium is king when it comes to sleep. Get the spray, saturate your feet before bed, and you'll be out like a light.
Magnesium spray helps a lot with the foot cramps that plague me at bedtime.
Congratulations. I'm glad you found methods that work for you, and hopefully others can learn from your experience. It's really nice to hear a success story on here now and again. So often it feels like the rest of us are shouting into the void without anything getting better.
I also love the sound of rain. My top three tracks are heavy rain, thunderstorm and blizzard. A warm bed somehow feels comfier when it sounds like the clouds have a bone to pick with the earth.
Thanks, really appreciate that. Sleep struggles can feel like an endless loop, so finally seeing progress has been huge.
And yeah, rain sounds are next level. I was going to try thunderstorms but thought they'd be too intense. Will give it a go.
