My skin before and after I dumped him

Small win

My acne was so awful that I saw a dermatologist and was about to start isotretinoin. I'd even signed all the forms. It had never been this bad, and they chalked it up to hormonal changes in my mid 20s. It started when I was 25, and I'm 26 now.

But it turned out the real problem was being in a toxic relationship and getting drunk every night.

I really didn't change my skincare routine to get rid of the acne. The issue was internal. It wasn't until my skin cleared up that I felt comfortable experimenting with new products for the dark marks and for hydration.

My best skincare advice is to quit drinking, and if he's bad for you, throw the whole man away.

Girl, I swear our bodies know before we do. They literally reject someone who's not meant for us. The glow up after ending a bad relationship is crazy: skin, hair, weight, mental health. And when someone is good for us, our bodies respond too. It's so strange, and we usually ignore the signs and don't realize until after.

I think it has a lot to do with stress and anxiety and what they do to our metabolism, immune system and overall health.

I relate to this so much. My last relationship destroyed my skin, my hair, my appetite, my sleep, my focus, everything. My health improved so much in the years after it ended. Now I always pay close attention to how my health responds to people and places.

Did he have a beard, out of curiosity?

He did not, actually. My current boyfriend does, and I'm very happy with him. We sleep at my house and I change my pillowcases often.

I once had a muscle spasm in my upper back that wouldn't go away no matter what I threw at it. High dose painkillers, physio, heat, massage, you name it, for months. Then I broke up with my awful fiance, and I swear it was 50% better the next day, and two days later it was gone and never came back. It was apparently the bad boyfriend cramp.

I think drinking dried out my skin a lot, and that probably caused breakouts. Glad you got out of that relationship. Here's to calmer skin and a better you.

That's what happened to me. My skin got painfully dry and then came the massive breakouts.

When you didn't have bad skin, just a bad boyfriend.

Congratulations. My skin is like this right now because of work stress. I'm going to quit and see what happens.

After I quit, everyone who saw me kept saying how much better my skin looked. I hadn't even realized. Good luck to you.

Could it also be diet? I've had exes with terrible diets, fried food, sweets, lots of salt, and after we broke up my skin got so much better.

No, it was definitely the alcohol. That was the only thing I changed about my diet. My ex drank a lot and would encourage me to do the same.

This is so true. Stress does terrible things to skin, I learned that the hard way myself. Glad you're in a better place now.

I found out alcohol is so bad for my skin, worse than I thought. I drank for a couple of days last weekend and, lo and behold, two new pimples. I'm clearing them up easily with skincare and pimple patches, but when I was drinking heavily every day, the acne appeared faster than I could clear it.
