My weird but effective sleep trick: pretend I'm a medieval peasant

Advice

After trying everything, melatonin, white noise, breathing, you name it, I found a trick that actually helps me fall asleep. I pretend I'm a medieval peasant.

No emails, no bills, no doomscrolling. Just a tired cabbage farmer lying on a straw bed, no wolves nearby, nothing to do but sleep.

It sounds dumb, but the mental shift works. No pressure to optimize rest, just old school exhaustion. I fall asleep faster pretending I've never seen a smartphone than I ever did using one to track my sleep.

Try it. Pick your own vibe: bard, viking, 1800s librarian. Just keep it low tech and low stress. Cheers, guys.

I love this. Inspired by ships stranded in the ice for an entire winter, I pretend I'm part of a crew with nothing to do but hibernate and stay warm. We each have our own enclosed bed with a thick curtain to pull shut when you get in. In my little bed there's a round window that looks out at the ice and glaciers in the moonlight. Somehow I'm warm and cozy and we're all sleeping.

I do exactly this and it's worked for years now. I'm a WW2 soldier, always fighting a new mission.

I hate myself, because when I first read this I was about to thank you for your service. Then I was like, wait. I'll see myself out.

I'm sitting on the moon looking back at the Earth. It's quiet and peaceful, and all the drama down there is so tiny and far away.

This is excellent. I do something similar. I picture my feet in badass blue heeled boots walking along a city sidewalk. I stop at the flower shop and pick up matching flowers for my meeting. I walk to the high rise, go up to floor 25, open the door to a conference table and a full wall of windows, and sit at the head of the table to meet my department leaders, who are each in charge of a different system in my body.

After several years of this, I never get past the flower shop now.

This might be a dumb question, but how do you all do that? I understand the idea, but how do you fight the racing thoughts? Do you describe in your head what's happening? Do you picture it? I think I'd feel silly lying there, knowing my mind is just going to drift back to whatever was keeping me up.
