What non-skincare habit made the biggest difference to your skin?
DiscussionNot products or routines, but things like sleep, diet, stress, exercise, alcohol, smoking, mental health, changing pillowcases, or lifestyle changes in general.
For me it's pretty standard, but limiting sugar did wonders for my skin. I noticed fewer breakouts, less oiliness and less puffiness.
What did you change, and what improvements did you actually notice?
Cutting back on alcohol and exercising daily.
Damn, I've been doing this one backwards.
Alcohol was my worst enemy. Ever since I quit it completely, my life has been so much better.
Quitting smoking brought more colour back into my skin. Cutting back on caffeine and alcohol helped with the dehydration, though I added more water to my diet too. A silk pillowcase is good for both hair and face.
As an older Gen X, I promise you that, outside of tretinoin and a good sunscreen, consistency is the most important thing. Much more important than the brand or the latest active ingredient, sheet mask or eye cream. Just take good care of your skin every single day. People are surprised to hear I used to smoke, had a terrible diet and drank a ton of coffee and diet soda, and I chalk it up to decades of consistency.
Not being with my ex. When we were together I'd cry most days. No matter how much moisturizer I used, my under eyes were dry and wrinkly all the time. Expensive eye serums, the best barrier repair balms, plain petroleum jelly, none of it helped. Now that we're not together and I don't cry all the time, my under eyes look so much better.
I weirdly always clear up when I go on holiday abroad. I'm UK based, so maybe it's the extra sunlight? I don't really change my eating or drinking much, although I suppose my stress is much lower. My digestion gets better on trips abroad too.
It's the water. You have extremely hard water. Everyone I know who moved to the UK immediately started having problems with their skin and hair.
I've noticed this too, and I have hard water in Canada. When I travelled to Scotland my skin was the clearest it had ever been, for up to a month after the trip. My hair was phenomenal too. Actual curls instead of frizz.
Drinking more water and eating healthier in general. I eat more veggies, lean protein and fiber, and it seems to really nourish my skin. It's become more glowy and more even since I started eating better, which was already a year into my skincare routine. I'm sure the regular exercise helps too.
A humidifier next to my bed. It keeps things from drying out overnight, and honestly it just helps me sleep better, which also helps my skin.
A regular sleep schedule. Pretty much every part of my skin improves when I stick to a routine. Currently writing this at 2:25 in the morning, though.
Giving up caffeine. My skin was amazing. I did it for 3 months, but I was miserable and went back to caffeine. My mood outweighed my vanity.
